You did it again today and you need to know how history will judge the line you just crossed. It is a line thankfully only the first of a series that makes the military political, and the political, military. It is a line which history shows is always the first one crossed when a democratic government in some other country has started down the long, slippery, suicidal slope towards a Military Junta."

Jason Leopold: An Interview With Joseph Wilson
Jason Leopold reports: "In a recent interview, former US Ambassador Joseph Wilson told me that he and his wife, Valerie Plame Wilson, both strongly feel that Vice President Dick Cheney is behind efforts to block her from discussing her work for the Central Intelligence Agency before 2002 in a memoir to be published in October titled 'Fair Game.' Plame Wilson's undercover CIA identity was leaked to a handful of reporters by senior Bush administration officials. She and her husband believe the leak was in retaliation after he spoke out against the White House concerning Iraq."

Bill Moyers Interviews Maxine Hong Kingston
Bill Moyers writes: "For all the words Maxine Hong Kingston has poured onto the page from her own life and mind, for the many years Maxine Hong Kingston has been coaxing words from others. In 1993 she put out a call to veterans to join her in workshops devoted to turning their experiences into poems, novels, and essays. Here in the hills of Northern California, over 500 veterans...from every war since World War II have taken part, and some of their finest work has now been published in this book, 'Veterans of War; Veterans of Peace.' For many of them it has been a life-changing, even life-saving, experience."

The Senate Armed Services Committee held a hearing in preparation for an expected showdown with the Bush administration over the Military Commissions Act, which was narrowly passed last year. Congressional Democrats are expected to pass legislation this year to amend provisions in the act such as the denial of habeas corpus, the narrowing of the accepted definitions of "cruel and inhuman treatment," and the shielding of senior administration officials from accountability for detainee abuses. Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont, was the first witness, and called the current treatment of detainees "un-American."

Keith Olbermann: Where Does the Politicization of Justice End?
Keith Olbermann says: "It was at first a disturbing story about political servitude violating the sanctity of the offices of federal prosecutors. Then it was a story about employees in those offices being hired only if they were political adherents, something that rang of the old Soviet Politburo. But the Alberto Gonzales/US Attorney Firings scandal has now reshaped itself - like some governmental Andromeda Strain - into what looks like an attempt to deprive Democrats of the right to vote."

Pelosi: Congress Will Not Give the President a Blank Check
Speaker Nancy Pelosi responded to President Bush's veto of the Iraq supplemental bill: "Earlier today, the leader and I sent to the president a bill that made a strong commitment to support our men and women in uniform, and a strong commitment to honor our promises to our veterans. This was a bill that was worthy of the sacrifice of our men and women in uniform. It was a bill that honored and respected the wishes of the American people to have benchmarks, to have guidelines, to have standards for what is happening in Iraq.... The president vetoed the bill outright and, frankly, misrepresented what this legislation does."

Keith Olberman delivers a special comment about Rudolph Giuliani's remarks at a Lincoln Day dinner in New Hampshire, stating, "Rather than a reasoned discussion - rather than a political campaign advocating your own causes and extolling your own qualifications - you have bypassed all the intermediate steps, and moved directly to trying to terrorize the electorate into viewing a vote for a Democrat, not as a reasonable alternative and an inalienable right ... but as an act of suicide."

Climate Change in the Courts A Report by Sari Gelzer and Kelpie Wilson
In the first high court decision on global warming, the Supreme Court has ruled that it is the job of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to regulate greenhouse gases emitted from cars. This landmark ruling in the case of Massachusetts v. EPA has set a new precedent that will allow a plethora of global warming litigation cases to move forward. This decision will directly influence a current court case in which automakers are trying to block a California law that requires new cars and trucks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 22 percent by 2012 and 30 percent by 2016. This law has been adopted by ten other states, and if successfully implemented, would drastically transform the environmental standards of the auto industry. These court cases are an example of how litigation that attempts to force governments and corporations to act to combat global warming is gaining momentum.
